The photography industry is ramping up for the year's biggest event. It is the annual PMA (Photography Manufacturers' Association) trade show in Las Vegas. If I could pick a vacation spot next month as an amateur photographer, it would be PMA. This year, Canon has announced two new entries in the mid-level compact camera market. Actually, there are many new products by Canon and others, but this article will deal with two. The Powershot SX1 IS and Powershot SX200 IS are packed with improvements and new features that will make photographers at all levels, from rank amateurs to professionals, take a long look.

The Canon Powershot SX1 IS is an upgrade of the SX10, and it has actually already hit the camera market, but it has not yet been offered in the US. In spite of being an upgrade, it is a prosumer model with features like none before it. It is the first non-DSLR to have the CMOS sensor that is included in the DSLR professional models. The ISO range of the SX1 goes from 80 to 1600 with only slight image deterioration at the high end. Here are some of the other specs:

10 megapixels
Variable position 2.7" LCD
20x Optical Zoom (28mm to 560mm)
Hotshoe (for external flash)

Video recording on this camera is as good as a dedicated video camera. It can be played back on a HD television with great clarity. For the amateur photographer who is looking for a professional look, with video capabilities, but does not want the hassel of carrying equipment and switching lenses, this may be the one for you. It could also be the "carry everywhere" camera for professionals. The second of the two SX models offered in March is the Canon Powershot SX200 IS. This is a truly compact camera with amazing power and flexibility. It will capture close-up at 28mm and zoom to 12x (336mm). It is sleek and good-looking, coming in 3 designer colors, black, blue, and cranberry. This new digital camera has an array of controls and options to give the user as much or as little control over the outcome as desired. Some of the notable specs are:

The Canon Powershot SX200 IS is a little package with a powerful punch. It is a great camera for outings or vactions. It can be carried anywhere because it is a true compact, yet has the capablility to take large enough pictures to easily print at 8 x10 and much larger. It will capture HD video as good as a dedicated camcorder. It will most undoubtedly put Canon at the top of their game once again.

Canon's Lens lineup may be a little daunting for any new SLR or DSLR camera owner. The primary reason for this is probably the fact that Canon offers more than 60 interchangeable lenses for its series of SLR and DSLR cameras. This lens line-up includes Primes, Zooms, Tilt & Shifts, Macros, Wide Lenses, Telephoto Lenses and Super Telephoto Lenses.

Although Canon manufactures many types of lenses, it's EF lineup is the most popular as these lenses with the EF mount fit all of Canon's SLR and DSLR cameras. In addition to this, Canon also manufactures the EF-S lens lineup that fits on Canon's range of consumer cameras with APS-C CMOS sensors such as the Rebel series. The EF-S lenses can only be used on the APS-C cameras, but these cameras can also use the normal EF Lenses. Every Canon EF lens can be classified in one of the following classes:

Prime (fixed) lenses

Ultra Wide - Primes usually with a focal length of 20mm or less such as the EF14mm f/2.8L II USM. Used primarily for landscapes.

Zoom (adjustable) Lenses

Wide Zoom - Zooms that start between 16 and 22mm of focal length like the EF17-40mm f/4L USM. Useful for landscapes & Weddings.
Standard Zoom - Zooms that start between 24 and 28mm on the wide end and a reach between 70 and 200mm, like the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Useful for Weddings & Portraits.
Telephoto Zoom - Zooms that start at 28mm at the wide end with a reach of between 70 and 300mm, like the popular EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. Used for a wide variety of applications such as weddings, wildlife, bird & street photography.

EF-S Lenses
Lenses with a special mount that can only be used with Canon's APS-C sensor cameras, such as the Rebel series. Cameras with the APS-C sensore has a 1.6x multiplying effect on normal EF lenses, therefore the need for lenses like the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM which is useful for landscape photography with the Rebel series.

Macro Lenses
Lenses used for macro photography, such as the EF180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.

Tilt & Shift Lenses
Lenses like the TS-E24mm f/3.5L are primarily used for architecture photography.In each of the classes listed above, except for the EF-S class, special high quality "L" lenses can be found. These lenses are made of special materials, are usually weather proof, heavy and produce images of stunning sharpness and quality.

I knew that i needed a new camera when I reached the point of couldn't getting more from the point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot devices that i have been using for six years now. I took a lot of pictures, because they're handy and portable and I always had my camera with me, but I started experiencing problems like poor performance at low-light settings and delay between shots.

Even though I like my compact Canon, for a DSLR I narrowed my choices to the Nikon D60 or the Sony A300. I eventually chose the D60 and I ordered it from Amazon. Profiting of their 30-day price match policy, I got some of my money back. Because the price of the Nikon D60 has gone down a few times and they were fast to refund the difference from what I initially paid. But keep in mind that Amazon doesn't warn you when the price changes, it's up to you to follow for 30 days if it drops.

Why I chose the Nikon over the Sony is simple: it's less heavy and compact, making it easier to carry; also, the LCD menu is intuitive and clear and, of course, because Nikon is well-respected for the fine lenses it produces, and in a DSLR it's really about which line you want to follow in purchasing lenses in the future.

Even though the camera doesn't fit in my pocket like I used to carry my point-and-shoot devices, it's still pretty comfortable to have with you. Thanks to kit lens' VR (vibration reduction) and its neat balance with the camera's compact body, the weight of the lens won't point it down.

Another great thing is that the camera is pretty efficient in low-light settings. You can even beat the flash, and in my opinion you can get better quality pictures this way. Still, the flash has a more even coverage than that of a compact camera and is also more powerful. The manual explains all you need to know about what this camera has, but you won't find a thorough guide for DSLRs.

One thing you should know about this camera is that auto-focus only works with Nikon AF-S lenses. So you'll have to manually focus when using most Nikon "prime" lenses. It also lacks live preview. You only see your picture on the LCD screen after you've pushed the button.

But I'm pleased with my decision and I warmly recommend the Nikon for anyone who wants to try a DSLR camera.

Before showering praise or criticism on any specific telephoto lens, it may be worthwhile to expel a few words on exactly what a camera telephoto lens is, and what it does.

In a nutshell, a telephoto lens brings the subject targeted by the photographer, closer to that said photographer. And as a result, produces a still photograph or video for any subsequent viewers that is larger, more detailed and exhibits greater clarity then could have been achieved without the benefit of an additional lens. A somewhat more technical definition would be a lens that is built from a rather long focal length lens, but where the actual tangible length of this lens is less than the desired focal length. That is not to suggest, that every lens with a longer focal length than normal is a true telephoto lens. A true telephoto lens will contain a combination of rear lenses ofter referred to as the telephoto group.

There are a few points to consider when buying a digital camera telephoto lens.

It's important to know what camera or cameras, you intend to use the lens with. Different makes, models, and manufacturers often have their own lens mounting systems. Some maybe simple screw lenses, while others may have more elaborate mounting mechanisms.

Consider the subject environment you will be shooting in. While telephoto lens lend themselves to specific types of subjects, such as sporting events, wildlife photography, surveillance work and landscape vistas, that's not to suggest that they aren't also used for fashion or wedding photography.

If you never used a zoom lens much in the past, then sales staff can be an invaluable resource. They handle this type of equipment on a daily basis, are often more than will to share their opinions. They may be somewhat biased, especially if their working on commission, so be sure to take what they say with a grain of salt. A good source of unbiased information can be found online. The more reputable online sites like Amazon, contain tons of real users who often share their product experience in online reviews.

Reading manuals for the specific models can be helpful as well. Most manufacturers these days, place their product manuals online in PDF form. If you Google around a bit online, you should be able to find the manual of the product your looking for.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
This lens is great for anyone who wants to try out a L-series lens in the 10-200 mm focal length range, and not spend a whole ton of money. At the time of writing this, I'm finding this lens for under $600. Additionally, if your tired of hauling around the much heavier 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, this may be a better lens for you. Remember, this lens doesn't include IS, so that may or may not be a deal breaker for you.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

If money is less important than the quality of your photographs, then it may be time to step up to this lens. It goes for around $1700 new, or a couple hundred less used. It does however include image stabilization, which is important if a tripod is not an option for your photo shoots.

Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Some of the things to really like about this lens, include the remarkable sharpness and clarity. An auto focus that is both darn near silent, and fast. Also included is a dual image stabilization system. It is on the downside of course a heavy lens, which I'm sure your well aware of, if you've been doing your research with other telephoto lenses in this category.
