Ice cubes are merely frozen lumps of liquid. Most of the time we use ice cubes to cool off our drinks. But did you know that there are other uses for ice cubes? We're going to explore a few of them.
Water hanging plants. If you have a few potted plants hanging on your patio or back porch, watering them can be a bit tricky. To simplify the task, just drop a half dozen of ice cubes onto the surface of the soil daily. Because the ice melts slowly, the soil has time to absorb the moisture as needed, without the risk of messy overflow.
Revive your garbage disposal. If your garbage disposal has been sluggish lately or your sink drain has been getting clogged more than usual, your garbage disposal may not be running as smoothly as it should be. To revive the disposal, toss in 3 to 4 ice cubes and power up the disposal for about 30 seconds. The grinding of the ice cubes will help sharpen the blades of the disposal as well as dislodge grease and stuck-on food that can slow down the disposal. If you want to deodorize the garbage disposal, make the ice cubes out of white vinegar. White vinegar will help kill odor-causing bacteria.
Ensure reheated rice stays moist. If you've ever tried to warm up leftover rice in a microwave, it usually comes out nice and crunchy. To fix that, add an ice cube to the rice and cover with a lid. Heat the rice on high for 2 to 3 minutes. The steam created by the evaporating ice should infuse the rice grains with enough moisture so that it will come out with a light and fluffy texture.
Get rid of unsightly carpet dents. If you have acquired new furniture or just moved your existing furniture around, you may have some unsightly dents in your carpet. To get rid of the dents, place an ice cube on each one right before you go to bed. As the ice melts, the water will gradually sink into the fibers of the fabric and plump them back up before morning.
Clean a scorched coffeepot. How many times have you or somebody else at the office forgot to turn the burner off of the coffeepot which eventually leaves a scorched, burned mess in the bottom of the coffeepot? To remedy this, fill the coffeepot halfway with ice, add 1/4 cup of salt and swish vigorously. The abrasive salt and ice will create friction that should dislodge the burned-on stains.
