What You Need to Look For When Shopping For New Camera Lenses

เขียนโดย Eva | 07:15

For the beginning photographer with a point and shoot camera, the choice of camera lenses is often not an issue. This is because the average digital or film camera does not permit the photographer to change the lenses that they are using. However once someone has begun to delve more seriously into photography they may choose a camera where interchanging lenses is a possibility. Then, picking the right lens for the shot that you are trying to get becomes an important consideration.

There is a large difference between the popular point and shoot camera which has a fixed lens and a single lens reflex or SLR camera. This second type of camera is much more expensive because it has high performance features intended for a serious photographer. With any lens, the image is formed when light is allowed in through the end of the lens. That light then either strikes a digital sensor or a film plane. There are many excellent film based SLR models on the market but these are rapidly being overtaken by digital cameras.

If you will be doing a lot of shooting you will want to invest in specialized lenses over time. However, your average shooter requires just one lens to get them started. For regular shooting conditions, you want one with a focal length of between 35 and 70 mm.

There are a few things which make this lens more generalized than others. The first is that the focal length generally does not cause much if any image distortion which can be great for standard, posed photographs in regular conditions. The second is that it allows you to shoot in a wider range of light conditions than some of the other lenses.

Many people find that they love shooting birds or wildlife. If you are shooting these kinds of subjects you need to look into purchasing equipment which can handle fast movement and shooting over longer distances than other subjects. The same choice that you purchase for animals will also work very well for sporting events. Look for a focal length that starts at about one hundred and fifty millimeters and goes to more than three hundred millimeters.

The fact that you can take a picture very quickly with the above length of focus is important when shooting sports or wildlife. There is often a lot of action in these pictures so being able to snap pictures fast is important. However you may find that shooting with this focal length may mean that you do not get a wide view of the terrain around you.

If you want to shoot images of things like buildings you may want a wide angle lens. Buildings may call for a very small focal length and landscapes can have a longer focal length. This is because you want to get a lot of the scenery in but not get a lot of distortion. The balance between perspective and the amount of an image you can capture with a lens has been a bit of a balancing act for many years.

Once you start collecting camera lenses you may find it difficult to stop. However, despite the fun things you can do with your collection you will often find that there is one to which you return time and time again.

Canon Powershot SX1 and SX200 Digital Camera Review

เขียนโดย Eva | 05:16

The photography industry is ramping up for the year's biggest event. It is the annual PMA (Photography Manufacturers' Association) trade show in Las Vegas. If I could pick a vacation spot next month as an amateur photographer, it would be PMA. This year, Canon has announced two new entries in the mid-level compact camera market. Actually, there are many new products by Canon and others, but this article will deal with two. The Powershot SX1 IS and Powershot SX200 IS are packed with improvements and new features that will make photographers at all levels, from rank amateurs to professionals, take a long look.

The Canon Powershot SX1 IS is an upgrade of the SX10, and it has actually already hit the camera market, but it has not yet been offered in the US. In spite of being an upgrade, it is a prosumer model with features like none before it. It is the first non-DSLR to have the CMOS sensor that is included in the DSLR professional models. The ISO range of the SX1 goes from 80 to 1600 with only slight image deterioration at the high end. Here are some of the other specs:

10 megapixels
Variable position 2.7" LCD
20x Optical Zoom (28mm to 560mm)
Hotshoe (for external flash)
DIGIC 4 processor
1080p HD video records at 30fps
Suggested Retail Price $599

Video recording on this camera is as good as a dedicated video camera. It can be played back on a HD television with great clarity. For the amateur photographer who is looking for a professional look, with video capabilities, but does not want the hassel of carrying equipment and switching lenses, this may be the one for you. It could also be the "carry everywhere" camera for professionals. The second of the two SX models offered in March is the Canon Powershot SX200 IS. This is a truly compact camera with amazing power and flexibility. It will capture close-up at 28mm and zoom to 12x (336mm). It is sleek and good-looking, coming in 3 designer colors, black, blue, and cranberry. This new digital camera has an array of controls and options to give the user as much or as little control over the outcome as desired. Some of the notable specs are:

12.1 megapixels
12x Zoom (28-336 mm equivalent)
Digic 4 processor
Optical image stabilization to reduce camera blur
720p HD video
ISO up to 3200
3" LCD
Suggested Retail Price $349

The Canon Powershot SX200 IS is a little package with a powerful punch. It is a great camera for outings or vactions. It can be carried anywhere because it is a true compact, yet has the capablility to take large enough pictures to easily print at 8 x10 and much larger. It will capture HD video as good as a dedicated camcorder. It will most undoubtedly put Canon at the top of their game once again.

Nikon SLR Digital Camera Pros & Cons

เขียนโดย Eva | 05:01

I knew that i needed a new camera when I reached the point of couldn't getting more from the point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot devices that i have been using for six years now. I took a lot of pictures, because they're handy and portable and I always had my camera with me, but I started experiencing problems like poor performance at low-light settings and delay between shots.

Even though I like my compact Canon, for a DSLR I narrowed my choices to the Nikon D60 or the Sony A300. I eventually chose the D60 and I ordered it from Amazon. Profiting of their 30-day price match policy, I got some of my money back. Because the price of the Nikon D60 has gone down a few times and they were fast to refund the difference from what I initially paid. But keep in mind that Amazon doesn't warn you when the price changes, it's up to you to follow for 30 days if it drops.

Why I chose the Nikon over the Sony is simple: it's less heavy and compact, making it easier to carry; also, the LCD menu is intuitive and clear and, of course, because Nikon is well-respected for the fine lenses it produces, and in a DSLR it's really about which line you want to follow in purchasing lenses in the future.

Even though the camera doesn't fit in my pocket like I used to carry my point-and-shoot devices, it's still pretty comfortable to have with you. Thanks to kit lens' VR (vibration reduction) and its neat balance with the camera's compact body, the weight of the lens won't point it down.

Another great thing is that the camera is pretty efficient in low-light settings. You can even beat the flash, and in my opinion you can get better quality pictures this way. Still, the flash has a more even coverage than that of a compact camera and is also more powerful. The manual explains all you need to know about what this camera has, but you won't find a thorough guide for DSLRs.

One thing you should know about this camera is that auto-focus only works with Nikon AF-S lenses. So you'll have to manually focus when using most Nikon "prime" lenses. It also lacks live preview. You only see your picture on the LCD screen after you've pushed the button.

But I'm pleased with my decision and I warmly recommend the Nikon for anyone who wants to try a DSLR camera.

The Best & Worst Digital Camera Telephoto Lenses of 2009

เขียนโดย Eva | 04:51

Before showering praise or criticism on any specific telephoto lens, it may be worthwhile to expel a few words on exactly what a camera telephoto lens is, and what it does.

In a nutshell, a telephoto lens brings the subject targeted by the photographer, closer to that said photographer. And as a result, produces a still photograph or video for any subsequent viewers that is larger, more detailed and exhibits greater clarity then could have been achieved without the benefit of an additional lens. A somewhat more technical definition would be a lens that is built from a rather long focal length lens, but where the actual tangible length of this lens is less than the desired focal length. That is not to suggest, that every lens with a longer focal length than normal is a true telephoto lens. A true telephoto lens will contain a combination of rear lenses ofter referred to as the telephoto group.

There are a few points to consider when buying a digital camera telephoto lens.

It's important to know what camera or cameras, you intend to use the lens with. Different makes, models, and manufacturers often have their own lens mounting systems. Some maybe simple screw lenses, while others may have more elaborate mounting mechanisms.

Consider the subject environment you will be shooting in. While telephoto lens lend themselves to specific types of subjects, such as sporting events, wildlife photography, surveillance work and landscape vistas, that's not to suggest that they aren't also used for fashion or wedding photography.

If you never used a zoom lens much in the past, then sales staff can be an invaluable resource. They handle this type of equipment on a daily basis, are often more than will to share their opinions. They may be somewhat biased, especially if their working on commission, so be sure to take what they say with a grain of salt. A good source of unbiased information can be found online. The more reputable online sites like Amazon, contain tons of real users who often share their product experience in online reviews.

Reading manuals for the specific models can be helpful as well. Most manufacturers these days, place their product manuals online in PDF form. If you Google around a bit online, you should be able to find the manual of the product your looking for.

Now speaking of the better lens I and a number of happy customers would recommend are:

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
This lens is great for anyone who wants to try out a L-series lens in the 10-200 mm focal length range, and not spend a whole ton of money. At the time of writing this, I'm finding this lens for under $600. Additionally, if your tired of hauling around the much heavier 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, this may be a better lens for you. Remember, this lens doesn't include IS, so that may or may not be a deal breaker for you.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

If money is less important than the quality of your photographs, then it may be time to step up to this lens. It goes for around $1700 new, or a couple hundred less used. It does however include image stabilization, which is important if a tripod is not an option for your photo shoots.

Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Some of the things to really like about this lens, include the remarkable sharpness and clarity. An auto focus that is both darn near silent, and fast. Also included is a dual image stabilization system. It is on the downside of course a heavy lens, which I'm sure your well aware of, if you've been doing your research with other telephoto lenses in this category.

5 Good Reasons to Own a Canon Camera!

เขียนโดย Eva | 04:01

I'm going to get straight to the point! If you don't know what a Canon Camera is then I will tell you they are a fine piece of technology to own. A Canon digital camera is a camera that can take pictures digitally without the use of film! Canon makes a great deal of cameras ranging from the entry level point and shoot all the way up to the DSLR ones professionals use. You can buy them at just about any big chain retail store, but they are not cheap. Not as cheap as the ones you see next with them in the store, but that leads me to my first reason why you should own a Canon digital camera.

1. You should own a Canon camera because they cost more! That's right, I said they cost more because there is a reason behind that. If you ever looked at something and compared it to the other same items you noticed that there are some more costly than others! They all do the same thing, but yet there is a price difference between some of them. There could be a huge difference in price too! The reason lies behind the fact that the more expensive items in the same category are made better! The manufacture decided they wanted to add some better parts or features to that them in order for to be above the competition.

Well, those extra features and parts rack up the cost a little more, and they know that when it is being compared to, the quality they give will be better than what is offered. The manufacture cannot sell these products for what the competition sells theirs for because they are using way better parts so they increase their the cost of their product a little more, but they know it is absolutely better than what is being offered. You should as a smart buyer take that into consideration and spend a little more on one of Canon's cameras!

2. You should own a Canon because they take quality pictures! Have you ever seen a picture online or somewhere and thought it did not look good? The truth is that picture you saw was from a poorly made camera. In fact, it probably wasn't Canon that took the photo. Canon have very strict standards of quality to follow in order to produce the best images. Whether it is from a low cost Canon camera or from one of their professional grade cameras, they always take high quality pictures which results in the best photos. Additionally canons are known for this in the industry! Take advantage of the excellent photo quality Canon cameras produce!

3. You should own a Canon camera because they are built very well. Well, I take that back. They are built like TANKS! These cameras are no joke. Canon's high standards have yielded a camera that can take abuse. I wouldn't advise you dropping one of these if you own one, but they can take a beating. These cameras are so well built I have heard them surviving months and months of constant neglect from their owners. An example would be a friend of mine who had recently purchased a Canon camera. He decided it was just another camera and didn't care much about it. I have seen him drop it numerous times, shake it because he thought it froze on him, and left it in subzero temperatures only to find out he forgot it was there for days. After picking it up in those conditions and turning it on, the camera immediately functioned the way it was designed to. Snap shot and abuse after snap shot they can take a beating!

4. You should own a Canon because the lenses Canon uses are of the best in the industry. Even if you buy a point and shoot Canon if you look closely the lens is made of some of the highest materials! You can see VERY clearly through them, even for a person who has less than ideal vision. Anyone will notice an absolute clarity inside. The lenses Canon produces are very resistant to scratches and swirl marks. If you see something that may consist of a scratch or swirl mark try wiping it away with a soft cloth. That false scratch or swirl will go away instantly! On to the DSLR side of Canon their lenses are made of quality standards so high you cannot ruin them easily or get a bad picture! Unless you had the focus completely off and decided to use a different approach to your photography. Other than those few briefly mentioned quality standards, Canon lenses are amazing!

5. You should own a Canon because they have the best post processing software available to you! Canon's camera packages not only come with manuals, pages of additional information clearly written, but they include some of the best, if not BEST software package given free of charge for you to utilize after you have taken your pictures! You will have so much fun editing or fine tuning your photos to the way you exactly intended by using their top notch software. It also makes organizing your photos a piece of cake. If you want to fix sharpness issues, you can do that in their software. What about color tone? It's simple using just a few mouse clicks and your set. Got a problem with brightness? That's easy, just slide in your preference their awesome brightness tool and you're set. It doesn't get much better and easier with Canon's great software package all included with their high quality cameras!

Well, those are some strong solid 5 reasons I just gave you to own a Canon camera, and that is just scratching the surface. I haven't even talked about iso performance, flash capabilities, longer battery life, Canon DSLR being the way to go, megapixel quality, digic processors, and much more. If you'd like to learn more about these fine electronic items feel free to check out below!

Canon Digital Camera - From Humble Beginnings to World Class Company

เขียนโดย Eva | 19:52

Started in a single-room by three Japanese men in the year 1933 under the name of Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, Canon has come a long way today. It all began with the phantom prototype camera called the 'Kwanon'. At that time, Germany was considered to be the leader in camera production. German cameras were extremely expensive. So, Goro Yoshida, along with two others tried to produce a 35mm rangefinder camera at a cheaper price and came up with "Kwanon'.

However, at that time, one of the problems faced by the company was that it did not have a lens of its own. So, it decided to tie up with Nippon Kogaku Kogyo (who was to become the founder of Nikon) and acquire lenses from them. With the use of these lenses, Canon came up with its first commercial camera called the "Hansa Canon" in 1936 which became a hit. However, the company still had to go through hardships due to the War.

After the war, the company officially adopted the name "Canon" as its name. Up till then, the lens was under a different name, the camera had a different name and the company had a different name. So, in order to unify all these three, Canon came into existence on September 15, 1947. Slowly the company started to expand, and many historical cameras were created such as the Serenar 50mm f/1.8 lens in 1951, Canonet in 1961, AF35M (Autoboy) in 1979 and the EOS 650 in 1987.

The first Canon digital camera was the PowerShot 600 in 1996. Then, after making several advances in digital technology, Canon launched the EOS D2000 digital SLR camera in 1998 for professionals. In addition, the XL1 digital video camera was introduced. Due to its superior functionality and reliability, the XL1 became the official digital video camcorder of the NASA.

In order to provide the market with a cost effective camera along with superior functionality and performance, Canon introduced the EOS D60 in 2002 and the EOS 10D in 2003. These two cameras made Canon the market leader in digital technology. Then, the EOS Kiss Digital was introduced in 2003, which became a big success.

Today, Canon has introduced several digital camcorders. Starting with the FV30 and the FV200KIT in 2002, Canon went onto launch the FV M1 and the IXY DV M2 in 2003 in the mid range segment. As the company progresses, Canon continue to strive to provide its consumers with better and better technology at the lowest price possible. They have been known as a choice of the pros for many years in the world of photography but now with a broad line of products Canon is firmly positioned in the consumer market as well.

What is More Important? - Camera Body, Or Lens?

เขียนโดย Eva | 19:17

What are important things to know when deciding which photography equipment to get?

When I got interested in photography, I had absolutely no idea about which equipment to get. It was because there were so many different kinds of cameras to choose from, and not to mention all different kinds of lenses. Many of the people who are starting out on photography really do not know what kinds of equipment to get. It is because the world of photography is changing so fast that it is evolving as you read this article.

Compared to 10 years ago, the world of photography took a new form on how to capture the moments. The new introduction of digital sensors made the film to be obsolete, and made a film division of a global company like Agfa to discontinue its film line not too long ago. Some of the major producers of film camera even discontinued their lines of film cameras.

I started photography long before the digital cameras started to surface on the consumer market. So, I had to buy film cameras. I still do enjoy using film cameras and will continue to do so as long as the films are available in the market. It is because there is this true enjoyment of developing your own film in the darkroom that many people who started on photography with digital do not know about.

Although many people are already used to the digital cameras, but they do not really know what it is that they need to get when it comes to getting the equipments for serious photography. Most of the people just talk about how many mega-pixels the cameras have, and have no idea on what kind of camera they got. So, I will explain them to you so that you can make right decisions on getting the right camera equipments for you.

This is what most of the people do. They just see the picture on the display, and they are very happy with the image that they see on the screen. But, if you are serious about photography, then you should know that what you see on the screen is never the same with the pictures you are going to get. It is because of the quality of the camera equipments determines how the pictures are going to look like. Of course, there are many other factors that determines how to pictures are going to look. But, camera equipments are what you can control to create beautiful pictures.

There are basically three different types of cameras. They are point and shoot cameras, rangefinder cameras, and SLR (Single Lens Reflect) cameras. If you want to be serious with photography, then I personally recommend SLR cameras, and here is why.

The point and shoot cameras are what you see most of the times with other people. These cameras are basically computed image capturing devices. Some of them actually have built-in zoom lens and do more things then typical point and shoot cameras. Personally, I would not even call these as cameras, because they use digital sensors not like the old point and shoot film cameras where the images are being embedded onto the film which sometimes you can still get very high quality pictures. Most of the times, the point and shoot digital cameras have low quality digital imaging processors that the end result is not even worth the time for making a print. On this kind of camera, you basically have no control or very little control on how the pictures are being taken. You should stay away from this kind of cameras because you have basically no control on how you want your pictures to look like.

Next is rangefinder cameras, and I do not like them because it is a hybrid between point and shoot and SLR together. You have the control on focal lengths which basically is the ability to shoot different distances by changing lenses, but have approximate view on what you are really taking pictures of. It is because you are not seeing what the camera is taking pictures of. You are seeing through this open slot on the corner to take the pictures of. I can not compose my picture correctly with this type of cameras, so I do not own one of these cameras.

The one that I recommend is SLR cameras, and it is because you have the full control of what you can really control. The more you are able to control how the pictures are being taken, the more you will have better pictures. If you like film and know how to use film, then go on the internet and you will plenty of great used professional film camera equipments for very low price. On film cameras, you don't have to get the best of the best because the images are being captured on the film. So, just get mid level to professional level according to your budget. I do recommend Nikon because their lenses are good compare to their prices, and you can use the old Nikon lenses to any new Nikon bodies. This is very important because you will save lots of money when you decide to get more serious. Old canon lenses are not compatible to new Canon bodies, so I would stay away.

For those who chose to go digital, then you have to get the best and spend some serious dollars. With Nikon, you have to get at least D200 or better. It is because when you are taking pictures, the sensor is recording the images. If you get a cheaper digital camera, then you will be spending lots of money upgrading cameras as you become more and more serious. On digital cameras, it is not all about mega-pixels. It is about quality of the pixels and how the camera is recording the data from the sensor. Cheaper digital cameras, quality of the image is so dramatically different then the high end ones that you will be able to notice the differences when you compare the pictures side by side. That is the reason why I bought Nikon D3 when I had Nikon D2X which I upgraded from D1X.

I got these cameras because I am a professional, and I had to get these cameras to deliver highest quality. But if you are starting your path as a serious photographer, then go buy a used high end digital camera. It is because digital is keep getting updated and when you decide to upgrade, you would not lose too much money selling the old one to get a newer one.

Also, it is very crucial to get the faster lenses. I recommend spending more money on lenses then camera bodies. It is because camera lenses are what brings the images to your film or sensor. Don't be frugal on lenses! Get the best lenses possible. For a starter, I would recommend lenses with minimum F3.5 to F4. If you are really serious, then get F2.8. You will see that bodies will change, but the lenses will be there for you as long as you do photography. I would recommend 28-70mm F2.8 if you have digital camera with 1.5 crop factor or DX format, and 70-200mm F2.8 if you have full frame digital camera or FX format. Just having one of these lenses according to the camera body you got, you will be in pretty good shape just starting out.

Many people are saying "You must have 35mm or 50mm if you are using 35mm camera!", but I find that to be just a waste of money getting those lenses which you most likely would not use unless you always want to capture everything wide.

I will post more helpful stuff later...

I hope this helped you guys.

Old Fashioned High Resolution Photo Camera

เขียนโดย Eva | 03:33

Tired of trying to keep updated with the highest mega pixel resolution digital camera? Well even if one has tried to do that, most certainly he will soon find out that his few months old digital camera is outdated in terms of mega pixel resolution. It's an ever changing kind of product that has become very hard to keep updated, unless one is willing to spend more money by making purchases every six to twelve months.

If the main intention of purchasing a photo camera is enlarging the image, then mega pixel resolution indeed will become the main factor. In this case one might consider a different option, which will keep his product updated for years to come. I'm talking about a used 4x5" film photo camera, together with a high resolution flat bed film scanner. All of this for less than one thousand US dollars. With all of this, one will get over 100 mega pixels in fine detailed film resolution and fine scanned digital images that can be enlarged up to 30x40" in size with professional quality. These 4x5" film cameras have done a remarkable job in general personal and commercial photography such as wedding, portraiture, product, documentary, advertising and landscape for nearly a hundred years.

Where to find 4x5" used film cameras? Since some of these cameras were mostly used in the past, until the 1960's, it should be no problem in finding them in American auction web sites. Anyway, a good used 4x5" camera with lens can be found for less than four hundred US dollars.

As for the flat bed film scanner, one can find brand new ones for less than five hundred US dollars. Just make sure the scanner is able to scan films.

Whenever purchasing a 4x5" film camera, one should look for the following features: folds into a compact box, flexible bellows, lenses that can be easily interchanged, accepts sheet film, ground glass focusing screen, easily handheld and optical viewfinder accessory.

As for the lenses, there are four main categories: 1 - general purposes; 2 - wide field (mostly used for close up work and landscape); 3 - extreme wide angles lenses; 4 - special effects lenses (telephoto). However, one might use a general purpose 127 or 152mm lens for most of his photograph sessions. In cases where it requires special lenses, such as architecture or macro photography, one will still find lots of them available in auction sites. Used lenses for 4x5" cameras made after World War II have excellent performances comparable to today's modern lenses.

Whenever making a purchase of a 4x5" camera make sure that: 1 - the bellows have no light leaks, 2 - the lens shutter works accurate at all speeds; 4 - the lens elements have no fungus and scratches of any kind; 4 - the focus is working properly between the ground glass and the film.

The option of using a 4x5" film camera, together with a flat bed film scanner, for enlarging images with professional quality is viable and accessible. Cheaper than top digital cameras, the 4x5" film camera offers better image quality and will always be updated in the future, maintaining its original value.

For those who wishes the very most detailed image enlargement, one can always use the 8x10" film camera. Four times the physical film size of the 4x5", this option offers so much film resolution that it is considered by many as the ultimate step for photo image enlargement.

Sometimes analog products deliver better results that its digital counter parts. If you are doing the job of enlarging photo images, you should give it a try with a 4x5" camera. You might just surprise yourself.

SLR 35mm Camera Guide

เขียนโดย Eva | 23:19

If you're trying to become a professional photographer you might want to ditch the old camera and buy yourself a brand new SLR. Don't worry about choosing the wrong camera because below you'll find a great set of instructions that you'll find very useful while shopping.

SLR stands for single-lens reflex and if you're ready to make the big step toward it a 35mm will help you along the way. This is the best camera format for high-quality images and it's way better than wide-angle lenses, macro lenses or even zoom lenses.

On the other hand, a SLR camera is pretty expensive (almost $5,000) not to mention the rest of its accessories. Why is that? Because it simply offers the best control over the image. The technology behind SLRs uses regular 35mm films: black and white films, infrared films, transparency films and color negative films but you can also find a few models that still use 24mm Advanced Photo System films.

Autofocus vs. Manual Focus

Before buying a SLR you should decide if you want manual or auto focus (AF or MF). If you want AF you should know a few important details about these cameras:

- the electronics can let you down when you need them the most;

- the battery consumption is very high;

- the AF lenses can be pretty difficult to focus by hand especially when you want to switch to manual focus;

- the image provided by AF cameras is not exactly what you'd hoped for and that's mainly because of the limited range of their infrared beams;

- the autofocus is not very silent compared to the manual focus;

- the AF lenses are very often surrounded by plastic components that are not as durable as you may think.

If you use a manual focus you'll see that you'll be the one setting the focus, the shutter and the aperture and for most photographers that's simply great.

A few great manufacturers like Nikon, Pentax and Olympus use few electronics when making a manual focus SLR and this will help you better understand how all this works. Last but not least, a manual camera is considerably cheaper than an autofocus one.

To sum up all the above it's very important for you to know exactly what type of focus you want to use because otherwise you'll be spending a lot of money on a camera that won't be able to make the pictures you want.

The Best SLR Entry Level Camera?

เขียนโดย Eva | 13:48

Thousands of camera buyers buying their first SLR can't be wrong right? If voting with your dollars counts, then I reckon the Canon Rebel XSi would be the best SLR entry level camera on the market today. Some may disagree, and quibble over which Canon Rebel should be the winner (the T1i is a contender), but it's really a matter of how deep is your pocket book.

Single lens reflex (digital single lens reflex) cameras provide many rewards over traditional point and shoot cameras, not the least of which is the power to use various lenses. Numerous photographers world wide pick single lens reflex cameras for the creativity multiple lenses offer. Those enthusiasts that won't use a DSLR camera end up staring at a skewed representation of their impending photograph. It's not so bad, if you ignore the zoom option, but things could be tougher if you try to zoom a picture and are having issues with focal length. The single lens reflex is best because the viewing and picture taking lens are in synch.

While DSLR purists may be staging a revolt, the conclusion by most camera manufacturers including Pentax and Fuji to allow consumers to use the LCD or viewfinder to shape their scenes is a great thing. The first step in Live View, is to utilise an additional supplemental sensor to apply the image being delivered from the prism mirror. That supplementary sensor image, will commence to buffer and send the perspective photograph to the view screen. While live view has been a hot item, it often meant forgoing autofocus which was unfortunate. The the newer Canon Rebel has made some inroads towards compensating for this.

DSLR Camera Types

DSLR With Interchangeable-lens

When the best SLR entry camera is cited, it's this type that most individuals would associate with. For this article, these are the ones we will be hashing out here. Like most professional DSLR cameras the type of lens you can choose, is entirely up to you. Whatever the photographic surroundings needs can be accommodated with a digital single lens reflex camera that allows for a variety of lenses.

Any of the Canon Rebel cameras, as well as the Nikon D40, D60, and D90 grace this category.

Do DSLR Cameras Come With Non Changeable Lenses?

If you wanted the features of a SLR without the scuffle of lugging a truck load of lenses, you have some selections. While this single lens reflex camera type would have been popular a few years ago, tech has moved ahead, and they have become virtually non existent.

Given the competitive nature of the best SLR entry level camera market, I've found the price and choice I want by shopping on the web. Small local camera boutiques simply can't compete with their high overhead and small makes and selection.

Understanding Depth of Field

เขียนโดย Eva | 08:59

Simply put depth of field (DOF) is how much of the photograph in front of and behind the main subject that is in focus. This however is not an even distribution. The range is approximately 1/3 in front of the main subject and 2/3 behind it.

To maximize your DOF do not focus right on your main subject. Focus 1/3 of the distance into the scene with the lens aperture set to the smallest possible. The part most people have difficulty with is how do you change the depth of field and why would you want to?

So let us find out.

The DOF can be shallow, with the main subject in sharp focus and the foreground and background out of focus. It can also be deep, with the foreground, the main subject and the background all in focus.

The three main factors to determine DOF are:

The focal length of the lens
The distance from the camera to the subject
The aperture or f-stop of the lens

How to change the DOF.

1. By changing the focal length.

A lens with a long focal length, such as a telephoto lens has an angle of view that is narrower than a lens with a shorter focal length. This results in a shallower DOF.

A lens with a short focal length, such as a wide-angle lens means a greater DOF. These shorter lenses have a greater angle of view, which results in the increase to the DOF.

2. Change the distance from the camera to the subject.

You can achieve the same result by moving the camera. The closer to the subject it is the shallower the DOF and the farther away the deeper the DOF.

3. By changing the aperture.

Changing the aperture (also referred to as the f-stop) will also change the DOF. A larger f-stop means a smaller aperture, which results in a larger DOF and a smaller f-stop will result in a larger aperture and shallower DOF.

Keep in mind that when you change the aperture you will also need to change the shutter speed.

When the f-stop is increased, decreasing the amount of light reaching the sensor, you will need to increase the time the sensor stays energized to compensate.

If you do not slow the shutter speed down the image may be too dark.

This may seem a little involved if you are just getting started but do not worry. Check your cameras manual for the semi-automatic settings.

If you chose the aperture priority (AP) setting, sometimes referred to as aperture value (AV) and select the f-stop you wish to use, the camera will automatically set the shutter speed for you.

When a slower shutter speed is selected be sure to use a tripod in order to prevent camera shake.

Why change the DOF.

There are times when you want the whole frame to be in focus such as a landscape shot. In this case set a large f-stop, for example f-22. This will close down the aperture and result in a greater DOF.

At other times you will want to keep only the main subject in focus. For example when photographing a small bird you want to keep all the attention on the main subject and not the surroundings. For this example set a small f-stop, f-2.8 which will open up the aperture and result in a shallow DOF.

To summarize. You should now have a pretty good understanding of depth of field.

For a greater DOF use a wider-angle lens and larger f-stop, or you could position the camera farther away from the subject. You can also use a combination of these two methods.

If you want a shallower DOF, then use a longer focal length lens and smaller f-stop, or position the camera closer to the subject.

Once again you could also use both of these methods in combination.

Play with the settings on your camera to see these results with your own photography. Just keep in mind, no matter what type of lens you are using, the larger the f-stop, the smaller the aperture, which results in a greater depth of field.

The inverse is also true. The smaller the f-stop, the larger the aperture is, which results in a shallower DOF.

There is no better way to understand what to do than by actually doing it.

SLR Camera Lenses - Top 5 Bestsellers and Why

เขียนโดย Eva | 01:08

Many people looking to buy a second lens for their digital SLR camera are baffled by the number of lenses available. There are so many to choose from, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the choices. Check out these 5 top SLR camera lenses and discover why people love them so much.

1. Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens

The key to this lens is the image stabilization. The stabilization allows more photo ops without having to use a tripod. This makes for more crystal clear photos at Johnny's soccer game, or capturing a flock of birds at take-off. Image stabilization is an absolute must on a hand-held zoom telephoto lens.

2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

For people looking for a fixed focal length, this lens is lightweight and affordable. The images are sharp with great color balance. It's great for portraits and it focuses as close as 18 inches, so you gardeners will find this lens very useful. Most people who use this lens can't stop talking about the picture quality.

3. Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens

This Nikkor telephoto zoom len also has image stabilization which they call Vibration Reduction. It's the Nikon version of the Canon listed above. The lens is ideal for sports, action, wildlife, and travel when you want a telephoto lens. The fans of this lens love it for capturing sports and action.

4. Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens

Like the 50mm Canon lens above, this lens has a fixed focal length. But the quality of the pictures outweighs the fact that you need to move your feet around alot to get the shot. It's really versatile and should be in everyone's camera bag. Fans of this lens say it works great in low light situations both indoors and out.

5. Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Zoom Nikkor Lens

This Nikkor telephoto zoom lens is great for professional or advanced amateur photographers. It helps you capture close-up sports shots and national park wildlife without standing right next to your subject. The Vibration Reductions extends the use of the camera to capture more shots while hand held. Like the telephoto lenses above, the lens is slower than a professional zoom, so it's not a good choice for action photography in lower light conditions (like indoor sports without flash or outside sports at dusk).

Now obviously, these SLR camera lenses are only suitable for Canon and Nikon camera fans. But take this information and find a lens that works with your camera. You'll explore an exciting new area of photography and take your hobby or profession to a whole new level.

The Best Small Digital Camera For the Money

เขียนโดย Eva | 12:33

For some time now I've been looking for the best small digital camera. I wanted a point and shoot, to carry around when I don't have the Nikon D80 with me. I wanted something small, with image stabilization, optical zoom, plus very good shutter speed.

In the end, after all the research I've done I decided to go either with the Canon SD 870, 850 IS or the G9. They all take very good photos, crispy and light, with a good IS. You can even zoom in and the images will still be sharp. If you take those photos at ISO 400, they will end up with less noise or the same noise as a D80.

The cameras I just mentioned are small and quite good. The Canon 870IS is a small camera, which can fit easily in the pocket. The 850 was a present I made to some relatives of mine during the holidays and they are extremely satisfied with the photos it takes. As for G9, it's a camera that can shoot videos as well, and it's one of my favorites so far.

The prices of the cameras I mentioned so far:

Canon Powershot G9: $500, with an optical zoom of 6x and 12.1 megapixels

Canon Powershot SD870IS, that has 8 megapixels, a 3.8x optical zoom, at a price of $624

Canon Powershot SD950IS, priced at $400, with a 12.1 megapixel resolution and 3.7 optical zoom

Canon Powershot SD 850 IS, at $300, with 4x zoom and 8 megapixels

Another digital camera that was suggested to me was the Olympus SP-570UZ. After looking around for a bit, I think it's a camera that can be carried easily when you want to take a photo without carrying a DSLR with you. The camera has a good sensor, very good zoom, image stabilization and a large aperture. The price is also OK, at a price around $400 - 500. This version is the third that was launched in this series.

The storage of the Olympus SP-570UZ can be done on xD cards, which you need to buy separately. The camera also ships with editing software, which is called Olympus Master 2. I especially like the 20x optical dual image zoom. The 10 megapixel resolution makes sure that you can print photos at a 18 x 24 inch size.

Some of the technologies that come with the camera are dual image stabilization, face detection, perfect shot preview and shadow adjustment technology.

Never Buy A Kodak Easyshare Z812IS Digital Camera

เขียนโดย Eva | 19:08

Do you ever wonder, what kind of people buy the truly bad digital cameras? Well, nine times out of ten, it's the person that spends ten minutes in their local camera store, tells the salesperson they have X amount to spend, and walks out the door with the first camera the salesperson recommends. Spending some time learning about the strengths, and more importantly the imperfections of the Kodak Easyshare Z812IS will help you decide if it's the right camera for your needs. With that in mind, let's shine some light on what's wrong with buying a Kodak Easyshare Z812IS digital camera.

Batteries have got to be the biggest deterrent to using any digital camera. Kodak hasn't really help make things any better with the Easyshare Z812IS. Between the mega-zoom lens on this camera, large LCD screen, and image stabilization, the Z812IS eats disposable batteries for breakfast, lunch and supper. It will of course run off disposable AA lithium batteries, or one CRV3 rechargeable batter pack. Unfortunately the CRV3 and the recharger required for it don't come bundled with the camera. So, be sure to include that extra expense in your budget, if rechargeables are important to you.

If you intend to shoot video with the Z812IS, be sure to stock up on HD cards. Being a high definition camera, this Kodak Easyshare will of course consume vast quantities of memory storage for videos. I'd recommend at least a 4Gb card (SD, SDHC or MMC), preferably a 8Gb, if your pocketbook is big enough. Another caveat to keep in mind is if your shooting video with lots of stops and pauses. Each stop or pause causes a separate video file to be written to the memory card. This could result in extra time in the editing room working with Z812IS videos files.

The Easyshares LCD is acceptable, but nothing spectacular. Kodak made the decision to go with a pretty slow refresh rate, which can result in jerky stuttering on the LCD if you move the camera around too much. The Z812IS LCD does try to compensate for the ambient light in your environment, but tends to lean towards too dark a display in the outdoors. You'll have to learn to make manual adjustments.

Those shortcomings on their own shouldn't be enough to stop someone from buying a Easyshare Z812IS, but here are a few more that might:

- no component cable connection for direct to HD TV viewing

- docking station not bundled with camera

- barrel distortion (bowing of image) is worse than it should be

- color fringing is still visible with vibrant color transitions

- image stabilization can't compare to competitors cameras

- JPEG file saves only, no RAW option mode

Never Buy A Canon PowerShot A720IS Digital Camera

เขียนโดย Eva | 04:16

The A720IS seems to generate a lot of debate regarding it's quality. If your really considering buying a Canon PowerShot A720IS digital camera, you need to consider both sides of the debate. With a plethora of digital camera salesman flooding the net, it's not hard to find someone to tell you how great the A720IS is. What you need is someone to point out it's faults. I'm more than happy to oblige.

The A720IS, can't seem to handle children, or other fast moving objects without manual intervention. Most of the time, you'll just end up with blurry pictures. Of all the auto settings this PowerShot offers, none seem to have a fast shutter speed. There is no "sports mode", and even the "kids mode" has a slower than expected shutter speed. You can of course select manual, but then you have to do all the settings manual, not just the shutter speed. This behaviour sort of defeats the whole purpose of being a simple to use point and shoot camera.

Compounding the original problem, is a slow flash recharge time. So, after you've taken your first blurry picture, you can expect to wait several seconds while the flash recharges. So much for taking a quick second photo to try and make up for the messed up one. The Canon A720IS (and several other Canons) only uses 2 double A batteries. Canon and others seem to have a tendency to overload the camera with large LCD screens, and power sucking flashes, and then cheap out in the battery power department. Even pro photographers rarely get the photo they want on the first shutter button squeeze.

If you need a little more coaxing to consider other cameras, here's a quick summary of other PowerShot A720IS problems:

- ISO settings above 400 produce very noisy images

- image stabilization produces questionable benefits

- wireless file transfer is absent

- windows software has less features then previous versions
